Pauline Mae Grier

Tapiola,

Pauline Mae (Thompson) Grier, the loving mother of 5 daughters, 12 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren passed away at Houghton County Medical Care Facility on Tuesday, May 23rd, 2017.  She was born August 17th, 1920 in Benton Township Michigan.  She was the oldest daughter of Joy and Katie Thompson.

Pauline grew up on a farm in Charlotte, Mi. and was the oldest of six children. She met her husband, James Grier in high school. They married in a North Carolina hospital where Jim was recuperating from injuries while serving in WWII. She graduated in 1939 from Charlotte High School where she played the E Flat Alto Horn in the high school band.   From there Pauline studied Secretarial Business at Cleary Business College in Ypsilanti, MI. After getting her degree she worked in a Detroit office until she married in 1943. In 1960, she and Jim bought the Grier Family Farm on Millerburg Road in Charlotte where they became dairy farmers and raised their daughters.  Over the years, she also worked at Wilcox Gay, Charlotte Chair Company and as a school secretary. Later she drove school bus for Charlotte schools which she enjoyed very much.  Pauline was very active in the local Farm Bureau, the Charlotte American Legion Post #42 Women’s Auxiliary, and she was a 4-H leader.

Pauline and Jim moved to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan in the early l990's where Jim passed away on January 5th, 2000. After that, Pauline continued to live in their Tapiola home and remained active at the Doelle Senior Center in Tapiola.

She later moved to Arbor Green and then to Houghton County Medical Center in 2015. In her later years, she enjoyed very much playing board and card games with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.  They brought her so much joy.  

She is survived by her youngest sister Rosalie Ann (Thomas) Nitzsche who lives in Dewitt Michigan, five daughters: Linda (Dave) Rulison and Rosemary (John Welch) Grier, of Tapiola, Michigan, Gloria (Bruce) Griffith of Springfield, Oregon, Sandy (Mitch) Grier-McGarvey, of Gregory Michigan and Katie (Paul Goudreault) Grier of River Falls, Wisconsin, 12 grandchildren Jora Brummette, Travus Brummette, Tim McGarvey, Ashley Miller, Jesse Rulison, Adam Rulison, Dylan Grier-Welch, Adeline Grier-Welch, Colette Gaona, Paul Griffith, Monet Goudreault, Adrien Goudreault and 9 great grandchildren.
